Learning Lab: Team Performance in a Virtual World

Learning Lab #8

The greater the uncertainty and the challenges we face, the more important collaboration becomes.

To meet the challenges of the next few months, organisations need: Everyone’s ideas and insights – we need to maximise contributions and improve openness to different perspectives; Collective problem solving across functions, not blame; Proactive mutual support to help each other meet daily challenges; We tend to know less about the psychology behind collaboration than we do about individual performance.

For many leaders, if there isn’t an obvious issue, they assume teamwork is fine.

Great teamwork, particularly across functions or levels of hierarchy, does not happen without deliberate effort.

One of the most striking features of organisations like NASA, Pixar and Google, is how much energy they invest in this.

Creating the optimum conditions for team performance is one of the most important things leaders need to focus on right now.
