Networking conversations for coaches

Tony Duff has some good news for coaches – you are no longer alone because now there is such a thing as the Advanced Practitioner Network. Come and see for yourself, the dates, venues and cost of the afternoon sessions are given below.

Although coaching is a very social business – after all coaches spend most of their working time with people – yet it can also be lonely. Lonely because, despite inviting feedback from clients – which they find difficult to offer since they are so involved with their own processes – it’s not often that coaches can get detached, disinterested, informedfeedback. And coaches tend to be very keen on feedback on account of their anxiety about that recurring question “How am I doing?” or even “How am I being?”

It’s easy to start feeling stuck, to become over-reliant on the same processes and ways of interacting.Yet if coaching is to be effective, coaches need to challenge and stretch clients. Clients are challenging for coaches. But where do coaches get additional challenge and stretch for themselves? Who do they share their reflections with on the decisions they made in meeting the challenges the clients presented?

To meet such needs Management Futures has created APN – the Advanced Practitioner Network– which will bring experienced coaches together for a series of half-day high energy meetings on themes ranging from Getting Beyond the Bubble(that’s the safe bubble of the coaching room) with Jenny Rogers, to Coaching Across Cultures(coaching is not only growing in the English-speaking world but globally) with Mike Stimson, (see article opposite) who has wide experience of working in diverse cultures with the British Council.

Besides the themes explored, the exchange of experience and insight between coaches should be enriching and reassuring. Be sure that conversation and conviviality will also be vital and stimulating – each afternoon ends with a good glass of wine.
