Phil Hayes
Phil has 20 years experience of working in the leadership development field. He is motivated by getting to the heart of what it takes to enable individuals to progress to their fullest potential and ambition. He believes that effective leadership in virtually any kind of organisation can, and should be, aimed at creating wider social benefit as well as ‘hard’ results.
Phil frequently encounters seasoned and experienced leaders of great ability who have, for various reasons, reached a plateau in their development or their motivation – often both. He is adept at introducing them to ideas or techniques that refresh their thinking and perspective. At the same time he remains committed to a pragmatic approach, and always takes as his starting point the current viewpoint of the individual leader. This allows him to create relationships with the leaders he works with that are based on confidence and trust.
Recent assignments:
- Developing the executive leadership team of an NHS Trust whilst they got to grips with the government change agenda
- Creating an innovative leadership development programme for a top medical instruments company based in Scotland as part of their ambition to break into the top 100 companies echelon
- Providing a suite of leadership development activities for the leadership group of one of the top UK bar chains whilst they plan and implement strategic change
- Working with the leadership team (and other top management teams) of one of the UK’s leading broadcasting organisations with a view to enhancing their leadership of strategic change
Phil has worked in a very wide variety of contexts over his 20 years of leadership development work. He is adept at tuning in to cultural diversity in its many forms and has had working assignments abroad in Hong Kong and Uganda.
Phil began his career in leadership development with the Brathay Hall Trust in Cumbria, where he became operations manager of their Leadership Development Centre. He later became Head of Management Training at the BBC, before going on to found Phil Hayes Associates and then co-found Management Futures Ltd. in 1997. He recently authored ‘NLP Coaching’ (OU Press 2006). He is an accomplished platform speaker and has spoken at a number of high profile conferences on leadership and coaching.
Phil has an MA in Management Learning as well as an arts honours degree. He is a Master Practitioner in NLP, holds a postgraduate certificate in psychodynamic counselling and (from an earlier career) the CQSW and Diploma in Social Work. He also holds the OCR Coaching Diploma.
