Janet McMillan

Janet McMillan is an expert in the field of organisational and leadership development, multi-agency partnership development, and public involvement.  She has 19 years of senior management experience in the NHS, most recently working as Executive Director of Partnerships with North East London Strategic Health Authority. 

Janet now specialises in leadership and organisational development work with the public and voluntary sector.  She has particular experience in working with NHS Boards and is currently leading Board development work for two NHS Trusts in London in waves 7 and 9 of the Foundation Trust development programme.  Janet’s experience also includes having been a member of the Project Board of two Trusts that have been successful in achieving Foundation Trust status, and she has also been a Governor on the Council of Governors at the Homerton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Janet is a skilled communicator, and has a strong track record in engaging and involving senior leaders, clinical staff, patients and local communities in change processes across the partnership arena.  Examples of recent consultancy work she has undertaken include:

  • Leading independent quality assurance audit of NHS consultation work across Hertfordshire;
  • Board development work with a number of NHS organisations to improve their effectiveness, and to prepare them for NHS Foundation Trust status;
  • Leading a self assessment process with an NHS Trust Board to support work on Board performance and effectiveness;
  • Development work with a PCT Board and Professional Executive Committee to develop their commissioning strategy;
  • Development work with the Executive Team of a large hospice to develop their long term business plan;
  • Facilitating a Quality Improvement Programme in an NHS Trust to engage a group of 50 change agents in improving the quality of care and the patient experience;
  • Facilitation of event with over 100 service users, carers and local providers to develop older peoples’ mental health services;
  • Work with a group of consultant psychiatrists and local commissioners to develop effective mental health home treatment services:

Janet has a diploma in Leadership Mentoring and Executive Coaching and is currently coaching a number of NHS senior leaders.  Janet has many years of working in a voluntary capacity with voluntary sector organisations, and is currently Vice Chair of Social Action for Health, a community development organisation based in Tower Hamlets.  She is also a member of the Common Purpose London Advisory Board.
