Bernard Cooke
Bernard has worked in management and organizational development for 20 years and as an executive coach for 7 years. As a business psychologist, he has also trained coaches in the application of psychological tools and methodologies in executive coaching. He is sustained by his fascination with the effects of organizational dynamics upon people and the reward that he receives on hearing his clients say, “I have never had this depth of conversation about myself before!”
Bernard’s coaching clients are senior managers dealing with the increasingly complex challenges of organisational change such as leadership style, and effective teamwork. He helps managers with the ‘inner game’ of work - strengthening the psychological resources they already have and removing the barriers, some self-imposed, that limit their achievements. His clients enjoy a greater clarity on who they really are, what they could become and how they will get there.
Recent coaching assignments include:
- Coaching a newly promoted Sales & Marketing Director in financial services with the transition to operating at a strategic level.
- Enabling a senior manager in the FMCG sector to adopt a more inclusive management style and create less conflict with his colleagues.
- Working with an Operations Manager in a charitable organisation to manage his team in a more inclusive way through greater delegation and more strategic guidance.
- Enabling an HR Manager adopt a more decisive leadership style in preparation for her promotion to Director.
- A Director of strategic partnerships of a global business information company, who wanted to influence a range of stakeholders.
- Coaching a team of partners of a legal firm into developing and then adopting new working practices to achieve business growth targets.
With a background of working in multi-national organisations, such as Unilever and Black & Decker, he understands the organisational context for change and the pressures exerted upon managers. As a psychologist he has designed and delivered courses for coaches on the application of psychometric instruments, such as the MBTI, FIRO-B and the 16PF. He has contributed to the book Psychometrics in Coaching (Edited by Passmore and to be published in February 2008).
