Mastery in Coaching
Module 2 The Psycho-Dynamics of Coaching : What coaching can learn from psychotherapy
Jenny Rogers and Julia Vaughan Smith
March 5th and 6th 2008
How psychologically alert are you? You are past the initial training stage, yet sometimes you hit mysterious blocks with your clients. Maybe you have identified that you lack some frameworks for understanding that might allow you to overcome blocks or to work at a deeper level with your clients.
Psycho-analysis and psychotherapy has had over 100 years to create useful ideas and tools for its practitioners. Coaching clients do not need ‘therapy’ but there is no need for the exaggerated fear of some coaches that they will somehow get out of their depth if they call on psychotherapeutic techniques. In fact it would be truer to say that all coaches need to have at least some of the easy grasp of human psychological development and change that is home territory for psychotherapists.
This two-day workshop will provide you with psychological frameworks and concepts, relevant to coaching practice of immediate practical value to executive coaches. The tutor-facilitators will be Julia Vaughan Smith and Jenny Rogers, both highly experienced Executive Coaches and Supervisors. Jenny has written extensively on the subject of coaching, including her best selling book Coaching Skills:A Handbook. In 2006 Julia, who is also UKCP registered and practising Integrative Psychotherapist, published an acclaimed book ‘Therapist into Coach’, written for psychotherapists and counsellors who want to be coaches.
